This message is to the forum moderators. I think that a good article for one of your upcoming issues would be the loud pipes save lives thing. Looking at this forum it has 5 pages of responses which ranks this topic way up there in interest. I would love to hear what MCN has to officially say about this very touchy subject. Is this a real safety feature or are these people just looking for their 15 minutes of fame, 7 seconds at a time?
Love to hear from ya Fred.

Loud pipe do nothing but get people p-i-s-s-e-d- off.
Besides all the noise is BEHIND the bike.

Most of all, it's just for noise. It' not really the best thing for the motor, either.
Gotta have back pressure.

In a word yes. But you'll never convince them of that. Just like you'll never convince some that think helmets do more harm than good. They're inconvincable.

To PJD and Jerseyjim, AMEN !!!!! ........and about not changing their minds ?? You're right. The sad facts are that some jerks just never grow up. All the noise the pipes make IS BEHIND them. Imagine riding with that even for a short time ?? Once again, I could care less what noise they want to hear if it didn't AFFECT OTHERS. Of course !! But, they're jerks and they don't care. Sad.

I know that MCN has run an article on aftermarket pipes, which basically showed an overall loss of power with them.

Also, recent (and not so recent) studies have shown that modified bikes are more likely to be involved in accidents.

I would love to see the information and stats boiled down into an understandable (for the layman) article and think that MCN is just the place for it.

Yup, shovels and earlier needed all the help they could get getting air through those heads, but modern(evo+) heads flow so good to start with, open pipes do more harm than good by far.

Loud Pipes - I remember that there was an article or a letter in MC News from a person that said, "the people that like loud pipes are appealing to an inner audience." So it seems to me that they are much like the teenager that has to have the music very loud. So loud that it bounces off of the building two blocks away. Those drivers they have an alterior motive of attracting attention.(I imagine)

People with loud pipes believe that some how some one will be really impressed. In much the same way like their own inner voice is impressed. This is just my take on the matter from after reading the above quoted comment. I don't know for certain as I like to ride for the ride itself not to impress others.

I don't mean to make anyone mad on this thread, just adding my voice to the choir.

I doubt we will see an article about loud pipes. Like others have said you are not going to convince anyone on either side to change their opinions. Besides Fred has to let the controversy over the OCC comments die down some first.

Torqueman is right you aren't gonna convince anyone. Everyone's mind is made up.

I'm concerned about the loss of freedom and legislation:

How loud is too loud? Lets legislate it. Also, you must wear a helmet. Not an open face its too dangerous. Better yet lets restrict horsepower. And why would you need more than 750cc? No wait, less than 500 cc would be better. But better yet, lets restrict motorcycles from gated communities. Then lets just legislate that cycles aren't acceptable, because everyone is now driving fuel efficient hybrids. Motorcycles emit too many emissions and the hybrids by that time will be getting better gas mileage.

You think I'm being funny??!! Where does it end?? Why does your view matter more than the tree huggers?? Why do you think you are right?? THINK ! The freedom you restrict today may be the right you lose tomorrow. I'd fight for your right to disagree with me. Would you do the same for me? If not, why not?

I'll tell you why. Because loud pipes are thought to be among other things, a juvenile approach to getting attention AND, and this is BIG, those pipes AFFECT OTHERS in a negative way.
And P-L-E-E-Z-E don't play defense lawyer ( ala johnnie Cochran , Shapiro, the dearly departed Kunstler, etc. ) and use the very laws that are designed to protect and serve us ( all of us ) by twisting them and twisting them some more to make a point that only serves as a disservice to the majority. Never mind common courtesy.
YES, their 'rights' are as important as mine BUT, and this is also BIG, NOT when their 'rights' AFFECT OTHERS. Is this sinking in yet ??
And please don't use these crazy anologies to make it seem like you are more intelligent, more tolerant, more civilized, etc.
I don't care if a smoker wants to smoke himself to death. I really don't. That's their 'right'. But they cannot and should not have the 'right' to smoke indoors because............. it AFFECTS OTHERS. Sinking in yet ?? How do you like my analogy ?

Loud pipes in public ?? No. Because it AFFECTS OTHERS. ( hope you're getting this )
Turn your stereo ALL THE WAY UP in your home ?? Great !! In PUBLIC ? Of course not !! Know why ?? Because it AFFECTS OTHERS. Are you getting this yet ??
And just to be clear, I am not talking about pipes that make a nice rumble. We're talking these ridiculous pipes that pi** people off. No, I don't know EXACTLY where to draw the line, but you know what we're talking about in this thread.
