It is fairly obvious that this is a very subjective issue , perhaps it is somewhat relative to the "what you ride vs. what I ride " catagorization that used to pollute this forum .

When I'm in the cage , a louder motorcycle gets my attention on an auditory level quicker than a quieter bike . Are some bikes too loud ? IMO , yes . Unbaffled shotgun pipes annoy me , and I'm certain that my mellow Screamin' Eagle pipes irritate some.......

RE: loud pipes save lives article

Yeah what you said hoopdc. I find wirewood's analysis of the forum website to be very ironic. I've been on the net now for about eight years and the MCN forums to me are the most informative and logically interactive that I have found to date. Wirewood's post looks like the typical post I would see on AOL or Yahoo! - "arrogant, rude, annoying." I'm glad I've finally found a website where the majority of the users can debate a subject in an intelligent and respectful manner.

RE: loud pipes save lives article

quote:

You know what? You lob softball cracks at a deranged guy like Wirewood (all the while making sure to include some silly smug comment about yours truly) yet you yourself EMBRACE the very climate and moronic practitioners (SRG/JC and others) that not only allow abuses to motorcycling (via loud pipes) but encourage them. I think maybe you watched one too many John Wayne war movies as a child? That would certainly explain your love for excessive noise and waging war.

You know, I once respected you. Boy oh boy, was that ever misplaced. Oh well, I never said that I was perfect. Anyway, it's far better that you continue to pee on motorcycling in the name of freedom, self-expression, and Harley Davidson, and that you do this under the absurd banner of Americanism. Try one of the old Kawasaki 2-stroke triples with megaphones, and see how many like those. Or try the truck with the Jake brakes blatting down a hill through town. Or for really loud, an F16 on takeoff with the 'burners. Funny - when the loud isn't a Harley (or clone) they'll gripe about it.

There's never time to do the job right. However, I will also say that once when driving my cage I heard loud pipes from a bike somewhere behind me. It took a good 10 seconds or so before I saw the bike, but I was well aware that a bike was in the vicinity. So, I'd say that loud pipes do make it safer to ride, but that's not most have them. tls

jib

RE: loud pipes save lives article

quote:
a no smoking area in a restaurant is like a no p e e i n g area in a pool.
Torqueman
Goldwing 03

ROFLMAO

John

Isaac Newton is my co-pilot.

RE: loud pipes save lives article

Thank you Torque for helping me show others how to have a healthy exchange of ideas.

BigHarleyDude

RE: loud pipes save lives article

quote:

I'm concerned about freedom and where we draw the line. I doubt too many of these freedoms will be lost in my lifetime at my age. If you had any idea the legal lobby going on by insurance companies, I dare say you might temper some of your statements. So if you want to talk about "twisting" laws talk to those guys and don't bother with your accusations to your "friends." Your one statement, "Never mind common courtesy," pretty much speaks for itself, I won't dignify that with a response, I have too much courtesy.

BigHarleyDude, I agree with you 100% about the loss of rights in this country. What has happened in this country even since 9/11 is unbelievable. And the lawyers and politicians (don't forget most politicians are lawyers) have sold our freedom to the highest bidder. The people who don't believe in the slippery slope theory have never owned a gun. You are so right.

Where I differ with you is noise laws have been on the books for years (the MI law was made in the late 60s.) These are not loss of freedoms they are lack of enforcement for the laws all ready on the books.

The old saying your right to swing you fist stops where my nose begins ring trues with loud pipes. Another one is a no smoking area in a restaurant is like a no p e e i n g area in a pool.

But I get your slipery slope point. Never mind common courtesy.
YES, their 'rights' are as important as mine BUT, and this is also BIG, NOT when their 'rights' AFFECT OTHERS. But I doubt the writers of our Bill of Rights realized we'd be fighting for our right to keep and bear arms and the way state's try to pass laws to evade this right.

You accuse me of playing defense lawyer but lawyers are actively involved in eroding our rights.

You mentioned my "crazy" analogy. I was not using analogies. I was pointing out that our legislators can go overboard. You ask how I liked your analogy and mentioned smoking. I think it was a good analogy. My Dad died recently from smoking. BUT the analogy is bad. I don't know anyone dying from noise pollution. I'm sure you will enlighten me.

You ask several times if "I was getting this." "Yes" I got it loud and clear. Trouble is, I "get" you guys all the time. Thats what makes my job so "pleasant." Thats not an analogy thats satire.

In closing, I know I used to agree with you. But now I'm wondering why. Maybe I'm changing my mind. Thank you for helping me with that. Your persuasion is overwhelming.

Now looking for LOUDD pipes to cruise the Ozarks,
BigHarleyDude

RE: loud pipes save lives article

Somehow I get the feeling that ONLY you guys are right. Sounds like a political discussion.

BigHarleyDude

RE: loud pipes save lives article

I'll tell you why. Because loud pipes are thought to be among other things, a juvenile approach to getting attention AND, and this is BIG, those pipes AFFECT OTHERS in a negative way.
And P-L-E-E-Z-E don't play defense lawyer ( ala johnnie Cochran , Shapiro, the dearly departed Kunstler, etc. ) and use the very laws that are designed to protect and serve us ( all of us ) by twisting them and twisting them some more to make a point that only serves as a disservice to the majority. Never mind common courtesy.
YES, their 'rights' are as important as mine BUT, and this is also BIG, NOT when their 'rights' AFFECT OTHERS. Is this sinking in yet ??
And please don't use these crazy anologies to make it seem like you are more intelligent, more tolerant, more civilized, etc.
I don't care if a smoker wants to smoke himself to death. I really don't. That's their 'right'. But they cannot and should not have the 'right' to smoke indoors because............. it AFFECTS OTHERS. Sinking in yet ?? How do you like my analogy ?

Loud pipes in public ?? No. Because it AFFECTS OTHERS. ( hope you're getting this )
Turn your stereo ALL THE WAY UP in your home ?? Great !! In PUBLIC ? Of course not !! Know why ?? Because it AFFECTS OTHERS. Are you getting this yet ??
And just to be clear, I am not talking about pipes that make a nice rumble. We're talking these ridiculous pipes that pi** people off. No, I don't know EXACTLY where to draw the line, but you know what we're talking about in this thread.

RE: loud pipes save lives article

Torqueman is right you aren't gonna convince anyone. Everyone's mind is made up.

I'm concerned about the loss of freedom and legislation:

How loud is too loud? Lets legislate it. Also, you must wear a helmet. Not an open face its too dangerous. Better yet lets restrict horsepower. And why would you need more than 750cc? No wait, less than 500 cc would be better. But better yet, lets restrict motorcycles from gated communities. Then lets just legislate that cycles aren't acceptable, because everyone is now driving fuel efficient hybrids. Motorcycles emit too many emissions and the hybrids by that time will be getting better gas mileage.

You think I'm being funny??!! Where does it end?? Why does your view matter more than the tree huggers?? Why do you think you are right?? THINK ! The freedom you restrict today may be the right you lose tomorrow. I'd fight for your right to disagree with me. Would you do the same for me? If not, why not?

BigHarleyDude

RE: loud pipes save lives article

I doubt we will see an article about loud pipes. Like others have said you are not going to convince anyone on either side to change their opinions. Besides Fred has to let the controversy over the OCC comments die down some first.

Torqueman
Goldwing 03
RE: loud pipes save lives article

Loud Pipes - I remember that there was an article or a letter in MC News from a person that said, "the people that like loud pipes are appealing to an inner audience." So it seems to me that they are much like the teenager that has to have the music very loud. So loud that it bounces off of the building two blocks away. Those drivers they have an alterior motive of attracting attention.(I imagine)

People with loud pipes believe that some how some one will be really impressed. In much the same way like their own inner voice is impressed. This is just my take on the matter from after reading the above quoted comment. I don't know for certain as I like to ride for the ride itself not to impress others.

I don't mean to make anyone mad on this thread, just adding my voice to the choir.

The "Z" MAN
BMW R1100R
Honda Shadow Spirit

RE: loud pipes save lives article

quote:

Loud pipe do nothing but get people p-i-s-s-e-d- off.
Besides all the noise is BEHIND the bike.

Most of all, it's just for noise. You're right. The sad facts are that some jerks just never grow up. All the noise the pipes make IS BEHIND them. Imagine riding with that even for a short time ?? Once again, I could care less what noise they want to hear if it didn't AFFECT OTHERS. Of course !! But, they're jerks and they don't care. Sad.
RE: loud pipes save lives article

quote:
are these people just looking for their 15 minutes of fame, 7 seconds at a time?

In a word yes. I think that a good article for one of your upcoming issues would be the loud pipes save lives thing. Looking at this forum it has 5 pages of responses which ranks this topic way up there in interest. I would love to hear what MCN has to officially say about this very touchy subject. Is this a real safety feature or are these people just looking for their 15 minutes of fame, 7 seconds at a time?
Love to hear from ya Fred.

Ride till it falls off.
